What is Love?

Love is often described as an emotion but this is a very sad and inaccurate description. Meaning this: feelings come and go, and if love is no more than a feeling, it is hardly worth our time. But certainly love is worth our time, and any love worth discussing endures through good feelings and bad. This way of thinking, that love is not an emotion but much more than mere emotion, stems from the understanding that humanity can pursue things of great value despite the existence of hardship.

Man is a reflection of God, according to our unfallen design and purpose. Love is not an emotion because the truest exemplification of love endures pain and sometimes causes immediate sadness. So love is not merely an internal state. To think it is solely internal contributes to perpetual misunderstandings about commitment. Why should we be surprised that so many marriages fail, and most people are totally clueless about respecting each other? If love is naught but ephemera, all commitments are silly.

Or in other words, to think love is an emotion is naive and detrimental to a healthy worldview because all good relationships depend on the understanding of love. To believe that love is an emotion is to believe that one of the most important concepts in human existence is nothing more than a chemical state.

In the absolute sense that describes all possible modes of human love, human love is a reflection of God’s nature. Human love has manifold relations specifically, however. Each human relationship and pursuit involves different levels of intimacy, priority and desire, and accordingly, different roles too, in the context of love. There may be the felt response to love, but such an indication of love is not love itself, nor is it a very useful and substantial description.

Love exists in many forms, such as love in friendship, in family, and sexual love within the bounds of marriage. Love is based on conscientious respect.

In every form of love, feeling may indicate the existence or pleasure of love, but the feeling that indicates the existence of love is not love itself.

Yet feelings often mislead us.

A thermostat indicates the reality of a given temperature, provided certain conditions exist. However if those conditions do not exist, then the thermostat is not an accurate source of information.

Love is a connection between persons. This connection, in its purest form, is a gift from God and possesses specific qualities.

Love is respect of virtue and goodness, and as such, love is not an emotion which is indiscriminately base. You do not genuinely love a person’s vice. So, true love is based on respect.

Love between persons that does not contain respect of character is love in name only. Or in other words, love without a basis of respect of character is infatuation, and not love.
Sex is an activity that requires intimacy, and intimacy without respect is hollow. Love is not hollow.

Humans possess a nature that is a reflection of God, according to our unfallen design and purpose.
